A brush fire that threatened four homes in Contra Costa County on Saturday night appears to be suspicious, authorities said.
Officials did not say why the blaze near Regatta Point in Hercules was questionable, but added that it is under investigation.
Crews got word of the flames around 6:48 p.m. and once they arrived found heavy vegetation and a section of wood fence on fire, according to a statement from the Contra Costa County Fire Department.
About 10 minutes later the 20 fire personnel on scene had the blaze under control. However, as the crews battled the flames they realized the closest fire hydrant was not working. They had to shuttle water to the fire from other nearby working hydrants.
Firefighters checked the other hydrants in the area and did not find any others that were broken. They reported the broken hydrant to EBMUD, officials said.
In addition to the homes on Regatta Point, the flames also threatened houses on Harris Street in Rodeo.
