SAN LEANDRO -- A 27-year-old man was arrested Tuesday when he fought with officers who grabbed him as he reached for a handgun, police said.
Markese Thomas, of Oakland, was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed firearm, and resisting arrest, Lt. Jeff Tudor said.
About 5:10 p.m., officers -- believing that Thomas matched the suspect description from a nearby robbery that occurred minutes earlier -- approached him and two other men in the 400 block of San Leandro Boulevard near Sempre Verde Park, Tudor said.
Thomas reached for his waistband and did not obey officers' commands to stop, prompting police to grab him, authorities said.
Thomas resisted the officers and kept trying to reach the front of his pants during the altercation, police said. After a short struggle, he was taken into custody, Tudor said.
Investigators later determined that Thomas was not involved in the robbery. The other two men, who cooperated with officers, were interviewed and released.
No injuries were reported.
Thomas is being held on $85,000 bail at Hayward city jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at the Hayward Hall of Justice.
