SUNOL — Two motorists were critically injured and a third suffered minor injuries in a head-on collision Thursday on a rural roadway near Interstate 680, authorities said.
Around 3:03 p.m., a 1993 Toyota Camry and a 2002 Honda Accord crashed into each on Highway 84/Vallecitos Road, about a half-mile east of I-680, Fremont fire Capt. Steve Silva said.
A 53-year-old Fremont woman driving the Accord westbound veered for unknown reasons onto the shoulder of the road, then careened back onto the highway, going over the double lines and into oncoming traffic, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The vehicle struck the eastbound Camry, which was driven by a 45-year-old Modesto man and occupied by a female passenger, according to the CHP.
Authorities used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the pair trapped inside the Camry, Silva said.
The Camry's driver was critically injured and airlifted to Eden Medical Center, where the passenger was transported by ambulance, authorities said.
The Honda's driver suffered critical injuries and was transported by ambulance to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, the CHP said.
The accident is under investigation. No arrests have been made.
The roadway was closed in both directions for about an hour, authorities said.
