FREMONT--A 52-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after running down a bicyclist, police said.
Mahinder Singh, of Fremont, was arrested after police said he swerved to hit a man on a bicycle. The cyclist was splitting lanes at a red light before cutting to the bike lane at the front of stopped traffic, Detective Bill Veteran said.
According to police, Singh, who was sitting at the light at Automall Parkway and Osgood Road, veered into the bike lane when the light went green, striking the bicyclist and throwing him down an embankment. A witness copied the man's license plate number before returning to help the victim.
A police sergeant spotted the truck traveling northbound on Fremont Blvd. at Eggers Dr. about 15 minutes later and arrested Singh at a high-risk enforcement stop, Veteran said. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
