Members of Antioch's faith community are holding a march Saturday to promote a message of peace in a neighborhood known for attracting crime.

The walk in the neighborhood off Sycamore Drive is aimed bringing all residents together in a concerted effort to stop the violence in Antioch neighborhoods, said the Rev. Nicolas Alexander of Do the Word Ministries.

"It's been getting worse and with the summertime going, there's fear that it's going to escalate even more," Alexander said. "Kids will have more free time, so they'll be prone to being out on the street."

The march will start at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Sycamore and L streets and finish at Contra Loma Park, which is at Dogwood and Mahogany ways. A rally will follow at the park.

There continues to be an influx of people moving in from urban cities such as Richmond and Oakland "looking for bad things to do," Alexander said. The goal of the gatherings is to show bad behavior will not be tolerated, he said.

Antioch must work harder make creating jobs and youth activities a priority, including putting a basketball court at Contra Loma Park to relieve tension, he said.

Alexander also plans on holding a march later in the month from the Contra Costa Fairgrounds to Antioch City Hall. The June 30 march will also start at 10:30 a.m., he said.
