OAKLAND -- A man at the scene of a street fight Saturday night in East Oakland was struck and killed by female motorist leaving the scene, police said Sunday.

Investigators said it appears the woman, who was arrested later, deliberately hit the man with the car.

The dead man was Luis Valasco, 33, of Oakland. The name of the driver, a 19-year-old Oakland woman, was not released pending a review of the case by the District Attorney's Office.

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of 61st Avenue and Eastlawn Street.

Police received reports of a street fight involving a large group of people but when officers arrived they found the man lying unconscious in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet determined Valasco's involvement was in the fight.

Officer Leo Sanchez said police developed information at the scene that Valasco was intentionally hit by a car driven by the woman who may had been involved in the fight and was leaving the area.

Police found the car and the woman a few blocks away from where the fight happened and took her into custody.

It was not immediately known if the woman and man knew each other.

The police investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 510-238-3821.
