HAYWARD -- A gang member wanted on suspicion of violating his parole holed himself up in a motel room for more than 45 minutes before surrendering Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The brief standoff began shortly after 3 p.m., when agents from the state Department of Justice attempted to arrest Joseph Baca, 34, of Union City, near the Days Inn and Suites in the 24400 block of Mission Boulevard near Highland Boulevard, according to DOJ public information officer Michelle Gregory.
Baca ran into a motel room and refused to come out, Gregory said. Authorities evacuated all guests and surrounded the motel with officers, a police dog and a helicopter, police said.
Baca, who was also wanted for evading arrest, surrendered to Hayward police about 3:50 p.m. and was taken into custody without incident along with an unidentified woman who was booked on suspicion of possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia, Gregory said.
Baca was not armed. No injuries were reported.
