'Summer Sailstice' set for Saturday
The Encinal Yacht Club will mark "Summer Sailstice," an annual event to promote sailing on the weekend closest to the summer solstice, on Saturday with live music, a boat building competition, free sail boat rides and other activities.
The free event will take place 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the yacht club, 1251 Pacific Marina. Summer Sailstice was launched in the Bay Area 12 years ago by Latitude 38 associate publisher John Arndt.
"The America's Cup has created a growing interest in sailing and we've seen a dramatic increase from those inquiring about sailing lessons," said Don Durant of Alameda's Club Nautique in Alameda. "Summer Sailstice has been part of the sailing culture for over a decade now. We feel that anyone whose interest has been piqued by Cup activities needs to get over to this fun event."
Along with the Estuary Stroll -- when all sailboats are invited to gather on the Oakland-Alameda Estuary at 2 p.m. for an aerial photograph -- the event will feature a visit from America's Cup yacht USA 76.
