CASTRO VALLEY -- Work has begun on the Castro Valley Veterans Memorial.
The memorial's site pad and upgraded parking lot should be finished by the end of July, according to general contractor Silicon Valley Paving. The work started earlier this month. Stones and brick pavers are expected to be in place by the end of October.
The memorial's dedication is planned for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9601 will host a pre-dedication dinner the evening before at the Castro Valley Moose Lodge.
The monument will feature a large star inside a circle 35 feet in diameter, with an American flag atop a pole in the center. It will be surrounded by six black granite slabs representing the branches of service -- Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Merchant Marines and Navy.
Contributions are still being solicited for the memorial, which is being constructed in Castro Valley Community Park, 18988 Lake Chabot Road. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.cvvm.info.
