An Orinda man was charged with murder Thursday in what law enforcement sources said was a machete attack on his live-in girlfriend after a fight.
James Collin, 62, was charged Thursday with one count of murder with an enhancement for use of a deadly weapon in connection with the death of 56-year-old Evangeline Cumbe Devera.
Collin was arrested Tuesday after police said he killed Devera in the home they had shared for 10 years in the 600 block of Moraga Way.
He is being held in the County Jail in Martinez on $1 million bail and is expected to return to court July 9.
Orinda police said Collin went to a neighbor's house shortly after noon Tuesday and told the neighbor to call police and report that Devera was dead.
Collin made "spontaneous statements" that he had "killed (Devera)" once police arrived and took him into custody, Orinda police Chief Jeff Jennings said.
The sheriff's office said an autopsy found the cause of death was "blunt force and sharp force injury."
Collin had a "history of domestic violence," Jennings said Tuesday, but a check of Contra Costa County showed no convictions on his criminal record.
