Antioch police shot and killed a man after a confrontation Thursday.
The incident started about 4 p.m. in the 4800 block of Lefebvre Way, around the corner from Country Hills Drive. Antioch police Capt. Steve McConnell confirmed that a man died and that officers were involved, but did not immediately provide details.
Officers did not disclose what led to the shooting but said early reports that the situation involved a hostage were erroneous.
A police source at the scene said no officers were injured.
The dead man's identity was not released by officials, but several people said he was a popular barber in the neighborhood. The man's sisters were at the scene and were distraught.
Witnesses said the man lived in a house on the street and that he appeared agitated earlier in the day. Neighbors said he was new to the area.
Heavily armored police wearing bulletproof vests arrived on the scene carrying high-powered rifles, witnesses said. They quickly surrounded the scene and blocked off a large swath of the street along Woolbridge Way and Winterglen Way, and later from Hillcrest Avenue to Chism Way.
Witnesses said they heard several rounds of gunfire, with one neighbor comparing the sound to fireworks.
Linda Johnson, a nearby resident, said she heard two sets of gunfire: first a couple of shots from a smaller gun, then a "hail of shots" from a larger-caliber one.
Police are continuing to investigate.
