SAN RAMON -- A grass fire burned several acres of dry grassland off Dougherty Road on Thursday, but crews were able to beat it back before it impacted any homes, the San Ramon Valley Fire Department reported.
Helicopters were flying overhead checking for hot spots but the 5:15 p.m. fire was contained in about 45 minutes.
No injuries to residents or firefighters have been reported.
When the fire broke out near Dougherty Road, a giant plume of smoke was visible for miles and firefighters worked to protect homes in the nearby area. No homes were damaged by the blaze, which was close to Verbena Way.
Some residents were evacuated for their own protection.
