San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was among three people who suffered gunshot and stabbing wounds early Saturday at a large party at his spacious home in the East San Jose foothills.
A source told The Associated Press that Smith suffered stab wounds at the party. But the 49ers and Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office wouldn't confirm that.
The 49ers' general manager, Trent Baalke, said in a statement that the 22-year-old Smith "incurred minor injuries during an incident last night" and that "we are in contact with Aldon, and thankful that his injuries were not more serious and that he is recovering comfortably."
Baalke said the 49ers "are also in communication with local authorities as they gather information regarding the incident, and will reserve further comment at this time."
Deputies were summoned by a 911 call at 2:14 a.m. to the property in the 4000 block of Higuera Highland Lane in the unincorporated foothills east of San Jose, said sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza. The caller reported hearing multiple gunshots coming from the home.
Public records show Smith lives on the street, and neighbors told a reporter Saturday that the party was at his home.
Deputies met a large crowd of people at the house party, but Cardoza said the partygoers were unable to immediately provide any information that would lead them to suspects.
"It was pretty chaotic when law enforcement arrived," Cardoza said. "There were at least
Cardoza said San Jose police and the California Highway Patrol were called for backup.
The sheriff's office would not identify or describe any of the victims for security and privacy reasons, other than to say that they were adults. All were taken to hospitals and expected to survive, Cardoza said.
Deputies identified the people at the party as they left the scene so they could interview them later as part of the investigation. Deputies restricted access to the road while continuing their investigation Saturday.
Neighbors said Smith's house has been a scene of frequent large parties. But homes on the street are far apart on spacious lots, and neighbors said they didn't hear much early-morning commotion.
The 6-foot 4-inch, 258-pound Smith was the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, a University of Missouri defensive end who totaled 20 sacks in 23 games in two collegiate seasons. He had a spectacular rookie season with the 49ers, but also some off-field troubles. In January, he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Miami Beach, Fla., with alcohol levels reportedly ranging from .176 to .194 percent in a state with a limit of .08 percent.
The sheriff's office, which provided no further details, asked anyone with information regarding the incident to call 408-808-4500. Those wishing to be anonymous can call 408-808-4431.
