SAN LEANDRO -- A transient was arrested Friday night after he set a trash can on fire outside a police station.
Manuel Lopez, 43, was taken into custody by force following the 9:30 p.m. incident near the entrance of the San Leandro Police Department at 901 East 14th St.
An officer looking at a surveillance monitor saw Lopez stuff several items inside a trash can and then pour liquid in the can, said Sgt. Joe Molettieri.
The items ignited, Molettieri said, and Lopez allegedly watched them burn for several seconds before walking away.
Officers attempted to stop Lopez, but he refused to put his hands behind his back and became combative while resisting police, authorities said.
Several officers eventually subdued the suspect and he was arrested on suspicion of arson and resisting arrest, police said.
The building did not sustain fire damage.
