SAN LEANDRO -- Authorities say a homeowner used Craigslist to help police track down $6,650 worth of stolen property, including jewelry, after someone broke into her San Leandro home earlier this month and stole the items.
A woman who lives in the 300 block of Dowling Drive told police that someone broke into her home July 3 and stole items including her jewelry and a computer then fled the home, said Lt. Randy Brandt.
Shortly after, the woman began monitoring Craigslist to see if the suspect would attempt to sell her stolen items, Brandt said.
When she noticed they were for sale, she contacted police, Brandt said.
Detectives then scheduled an appointment with the seller, and on July 9 met with the suspect who admitted he had the woman's stolen property, authorities said.
Police identified the suspect as Bryson Bagby, 23, of Hayward, who was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property.
Brandt said detectives don't believe Bagby was the burglar, but were able to apprehend him with the woman's stolen property.
While police commended the homeowner for her efforts, they warned victims not to directly contact suspects.
"The victim of this crime helped our investigation tremendously," Brandt said. "Any initial research a victim can do without putting themselves at risk increases the likelihood of solving crimes. I would encourage people to take a proactive approach to helping us by reporting suspicious activity and being good witnesses."
