The early portion of the rush hour commute near the interchange of Interstate 680 and Highway 24 became more tangled than normal Tuesday when a vehicle slammed into a light pole, knocking it into lanes of traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.
Nobody was injured in the 4:13 p.m. accident, which happened just east of the Pleasant Hill Road on eastbound Highway 24, Officer Pete Van Eckhardt said. But the pole fell across the three right lanes, forcing a severe traffic alert to be issued at 4:26 p.m.
The poles have electrical bases, Van Eckhardt said, which created difficulties in getting the poles removed immediately.
The alert was removed 10 minutes later after a freeway service patrol tow truck put a nonconductive tow hook on the pole and removed it to the shoulder of the freeway. Caltrans will oversee the replacement of the pole, Van Eckhardt said.
