The broadcast networks plan to introduce more than 20 new shows this fall and TV critic Chuck Barney and Assistant Features Editor Ardua Harris have been checking out early versions of the pilot episodes. Full reviews will be forthcoming, but for now, they're making some snap judgments:
The show: "Last Resort" (ABC)
Airs: 10 p.m. Thursdays (Premiere date TBA)
What's it about: Andre Braugher ("Homicide: Life On the Street") plays a commander of a nuclear submarine crew that goes rogue after his vessel is used as a pawn to provoke war with Pakistan. When they disobey orders to fire their missiles, they become the hunted and seek refuge on a tiny island.
He says: Shades of "Crimson Tide." This pilot from Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") is easily the most suspenseful, tense and exciting of the fall season. Braugher, as usual, commands your attention. Still, I'm skeptical about where the series will go from here.
She says: This isn't my type of show, but Braugher is magnetic. He elevates everything he's in, I'm not sure I'll tune into this one again, but Braugher just might convince me.
