OAKLAND -- AC Transit's $153 million plan for a new type of speedy bus service connecting Oakland and San Leandro cleared a key hurdle this week with approval by the city councils in both cities.
AC Transit plans its bus rapid transit project to run buses every five minutes along a 9.5-mile long route from 20th Street in downtown Oakland to the San Leandro BART station.
The project was endorsed Tuesday by the Oakland City Council and Monday by the San Leandro City Council.
AC Transit needs the cities' approval because they control the streets where the project will be developed. The bus system plans to install bus-only lanes along part of the route, and some passenger loading platforms in street medians.
