Defensive back Darcel McBath, a 2009 second-round draft pick by the Denver Broncos, has been signed by the 49ers to a one-year contract.
McBath adds depth to a secondary that is currently is without Dashon Goldson, a first-time Pro Bowler last season who has yet to sign his $6.2 million franchise tender. McBath's signing fills out the 49ers' 90-man roster limit heading into training camp.
Although initially listed as a cornerback on the 49ers' Twitter release announcing his signing, McBath played safety his first two seasons with the Broncos, whose defensive backs coach was the same one the 49ers now have, Ed Donatell.
McBath was a three-year starter at Texas Tech and teammate of 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree. He had two interceptions in 13 games as a Broncos rookie, and he played in seven games in 2010 before getting waived last preseason. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed him and put him in one game, a December affair against Atlanta in which he made three special teams tackles.
Fleming (torn ACL) has been placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list, according to Fox Sports/Scout.com's Aaron Wilson. Hampton, who tore the ACL in both knees in college, and Looney, who broke his left foot in Senior Bowl practice,
