Twenty West Contra Costa public high school students will receive certificates at a ceremony Friday for completing hospital internships this summer at Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo.
The center's Summer Youth Employment Program provided the students, many of whom are enrolled in high school health academies, work experience in their chosen career paths in various departments of the hospital.
"We need to give local students real-work experience that translates into good jobs, and will ultimately benefit our entire community," Eric Zell, chairman of the West Contra Costa Healthcare District, said in a news release. The health care district owns the hospital.
The students also attended weekly life skills classes for school credit that included training in public speaking, career development and financial literacy. They also attended pre-employment workshops on résumé writing, interviewing and other job-hunting skills.
The Summer Youth Employment Program is supported by the Contra Costa Workforce Development Board, Richmond YouthWorks, the City of San Pablo and the Doctors Medical Center staff.
The awards ceremony, which will include presentations by the students, is at 12:30 p.m. Friday in the auditorium of the hospital, 2000 Vale Road in San Pablo.
