SAN LEANDRO -- The city will begin accepting applications for a vacant council seat starting Thursday.
Councilwoman Joyce Starosciak resigned effective Wednesday. She announced earlier this summer that she was moving out of the city. San Leandro's charter requires that the City Council appoint someone to the post within 60 days or call a special election.
Applications will be accepted through Aug. 20. To be eligible, applicants must be registered voters and residents of District 4, which is in the western part of the city.
Depending on how many applications are received, the City Council may screen candidates at its Sept. 4 meeting. Interviews will be held during a special City Council meeting Sept. 13.
The appointment is only through December, when Starosciak's District 4 term ends. The seat is one of three council seats on the November ballot. Councilwoman Ursula Reed's District 2 and Councilman Jim Prola's District 6 seats are also on the ballot.
