RICHMOND -- Police have identified a suspect wanted in connection with an alleged attack on San Pablo Councilman Paul Morris in Richmond on July 3.
Albert Charles Beal, 55, is the subject of an outstanding $50,000 arrest warrant for felony battery causing serious injury, said Richmond Police Det. Tim Gard.
Berkeley police found Morris in his car on West Frontage Road near Gilman Street at about 3:15 p.m. July 3, dazed and semi-coherent, apparently as a result of an attack earlier that afternoon at a South Richmond house that Morris' property management company manages.
Morris told this newspaper a week after the incident that his company had just added the house, on San Joaquin Street, to its management portfolio and that he had gone there about 1:30 p.m. July 3 to introduce himself to the tenant, Beal.
Morris said he was waiting on the doorstep when Beal burst through the doorway shouting, "Get out! Get out!" and punched Morris in the chest.
Morris said he fell backward and hit his head on the concrete, and that the next thing he remembered was waking up in the passenger seat of his car near Golden Gate Fields, which is in Albany at the Berkeley city line. He told a Berkeley emergency dispatcher that Beal had driven him there in Morris' car, left him and "bolted."
He said he spent two days at Highland Hospital in Oakland and that he had suffered a slight concussion and a bruised tailbone.
Morris said this week that
No one answered the door of the South Richmond house during about a dozen attempts by this newspaper to contact someone there over the past three weeks.
About two weeks ago, a neighbor of Beal told this newspaper that Beal's wife apparently still lived at the house. A few days later, a man and woman moving about immediately outside the property took a reporter's phone number and said they would try to reach Beal to contact this newspaper to tell his side of the story.
The man and the woman did not identify themselves but told a reporter that they were not Albert Beal and Mrs. Beal.
