RICHMOND -- A second man wanted in connection with the killing of a 16-year-old high school football player turned himself in Wednesday, a police spokeswoman said.

Matthew John Capanis, 26, surrendered to a county probation unit in Martinez about 1 p.m. Wednesday, said Richmond Police Lt. Bisa French.

Ulises Grijalva, a Richmond native, was shot to death about 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of West MacDonald Avenue in Ricmond, French said. Police on Sunday arrested Jacob Stephens, 29, of Antioch while he was trying to run away from the scene. He is in custody on a parole violation while the district attorney reviews the case for a possible murder charge.

show weapons charges and crimes of violence in Contra Costa County, French said. He was released to a Lafayette residence last October following a domestic violence conviction under the state's prison realignment plan.

Police have said the shooting of Grijalva may have been gang-related, but those who knew the teen said he was not in a gang.

A varsity offensive lineman for the Kennedy High School football team, the victim was close to his family and his grandparents, with whom he regularly played blackjack card games for fun and money.

The killing was Richmond's 13th homicide of the year.
