PINOLE -- Incumbents Roy Swearingen and Peter Murray, the current mayor, will face challenger Ivette Ricco in the Pinole City Council race on Nov. 6 when two seats are at stake.
Another well-known name will appear on the ballot in Pinole, but in a different, regional race. Former Pinole Mayor and Councilwoman Maria Alegria, who lost her last two Pinole City Council bids, is a candidate for the BART governing board in District 7.
The redrawn District 7 includes most of West Contra Costa County as well as slices of Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. The other District 7 candidates are incumbent Lynette Sweet of San Francisco and West Contra Costa resident Zakhary Mallet.
Incumbent Pinole City Treasurer Judy Lee is the sole candidate for that office.
Alegria and then-Councilman Stephen Tilton were recalled by voters in February 2008 amid public ire over their friendship and perceived preferential treatment of a bar and restaurant owner who had failed to make payments on his city loans. Alegria's bid to regain her seat in November 2008 failed when she placed third to Murray and Swearingen in a race for two council seats. Alegria is a member of the Contra Costa Democratic Party Central Committee.
