A drunken driver turned the parking lot of a Concord shopping plaza into an obstacle course Saturday, first backing a vehicle into a sewing and vacuum shop, then hopping a curb and nearly hitting a tree, police said.
Police found and arrested the driver of the black Ford Explorer shortly after he backed into the front pane glass window of Monument Sew and Vac Center at 1701 Monument Boulevard near Virginia Lane.
Nobody was injured in the chaos, which occurred around 9:50 p.m. Police said the driver first backed into the store, destroying the glass and leaving brick rubble on the sidewalk. The driver then appeared to have driven the vehicle forward into a curb, where it came to a rest under a tree.
Police said the man then left the scene. They detained one man for questioning at the scene Saturday night, but it was not immediately known if he was the person later arrested.
City workers put up plywood to keep the public from entering the store, police said.
