RICHMOND -- West Contra Costa school board Trustee Tony Thurmond announced Monday that he will not seek re-election in November.

The one-term trustee and former Richmond City Councilman said he may pursue another elected office, such as running for state Assembly in 2014. He said he based his decision on a desire to serve both the Oakland community -- where he works as a nonprofit director -- and the Richmond community, where he lives.

Thurmond's decision not to run extends the filing deadline for new candidates until Wednesday. Incumbent Antonio Medrano is running and challengers Randall Enos and Todd Groves have qualified for the ballot. Robert Studdiford has pulled election papers, but had not yet filed them as of Saturday.
