CONCORD -- Police are searching for the person responsible for an armed robbery near an apartment building early Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred about 1:54 a.m., when a man walking to his apartment unit in a complex at 1650 Pine Street was accosted by another man, Concord police said. The suspect asked the man for a dollar and when the victim complied, the suspect demanded a wallet and cell phone, too, police said.
The victim refused, and the suspect punched the victim, kicked him to the ground and pistol-whipped him with the butt-end of a shotgun, police said. The suspect then took the wallet and fled.
Police say the suspect is a black man approximately 25 to 30 years old and 6 feet tall. They say he has a thin build, was clean shaven and was wearing a long sleeve shirt and dark blue pants. He also was seen walking with another man in the area before the robbery, police said.
Police did not identify the victim, who was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with serious injuries. The man is expected to survive.
