SAN LEANDRO-- An 18-year-old man was injured late Friday night after a drive-by shooter opened fire at his vehicle on Interstate 580, a CHP officer said.
About 11:15 p.m., Castro Valley CHP units received reports of shots fired near the area of westbound I-580 just west of 150th Avenue, CHP officer Ralph Caggiano said. According to statements from the victim and his passengers, a light-colored sedan pulled up next to them as they were traveling westbound and fired multiple shots at the vehicle.
The driver and owner of the vehicle, an 18-year-old San Leandro man, was the only person hit by gunfire, Caggiano said.
Police were already on scene attending to the man when CHP officers arrived, Caggiano said. The victim was taken to Eden Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
It is likely the incident was not random, Caggiano said, though it is unknown if the victim knew his shooter. CHP is continuing their investigation of the incident.
