PITTSBURG -- Brentwood former coach Ryan Frits was sentenced to state prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to a felony sex offense against an underage girl.
Frits, 37, appeared in Contra Costa County Superior Court to enter his plea to one count of sexual penetration of someone under the age of 18.
The longtime softball and soccer coach has been in the county jail in lieu of $160,000 bail since May 31, when Brentwood police arrested him on several counts involving sex with a minor.
The original charges also included one felony count of oral copulation and misdemeanor child molestation, all involving the same victim.
The county district attorney's office subsequently agreed to dismiss those, however; in exchange, Frits, who initially had pleaded not guilty, admitted responsibility for the remaining penetration charge.
Following the sentencing, the mother of his 17-year-old victim voiced disappointment that the courts system hadn't imposed a harsher punishment.
"Ryan should be charged with all charges -- no plea bargain," she told Judge Theresa Canepa.
Frits, a father of seven, used to coach for the Delta Baseball & Softball League, the Delta Youth Soccer League, as well as Hotshots, an all-girls, fast-pitch softball team.
Those who worked with him described Frits as likable and helpful.
But Hotshots' board of directors removed Frits in 2010 when they learned of his inappropriate behavior with a
Frits sent thousands of text messages to two young girls -- one of them a 12-year-old who received an estimated 16,000 from her coach over three months -- which prompted their parents to take out a temporary restraining order against him.
In addition to court fees totaling nearly $500, Frits was ordered to pay the victim's mother $273 for the wages she lost attending court procedures.
He also must register as a sex offender.
Frits' 16-month prison sentence automatically will be reduced by half; in addition, the 85 days he's spent in jail will be considered time already served.
