SAN LEANDRO -- Investigators have ruled out arson as a factor in a two-alarm fire last week at a Korean church, fire officials said.
Multiple reports to police suggesting Molotov cocktails were being thrown around the 2300 block of Miramar Avenue in unincorporated San Leandro, where the East Bay Korean Church of the Nazarene is located, have since been ruled out as the cause of the Aug. 22 blaze, Battalion Chief John Walsh said.
About 11:45 a.m., a 911 caller reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the hillside church, Walsh said. According to Alameda County Fire Spokeswoman Aisha Knowles, smoke could be seen from as far away as the 164th Avenue-Miramar exit off Interstate 580.
Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze by 12:45 p.m., Knowles said. No injuries were reported, though the church sustained heavy smoke and fire damage throughout the building, as well as extensive structural damage to the exterior.
According to Walsh, the cause and origin are still under investigation, though it does appear the fire originated outside.
