HAYWARD -- A 43-year-old man fatally wounded at his apartment building over the weekend has been identified, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Office.

Leonard Scott III, of Hayward, died Sunday after officers found him shot in the stomach in a hallway just outside his residence in the 24000 block of O'Neil Avenue, a coroner spokesman said Tuesday.

The killing marked the fourth homicide in Hayward so far this year, said Lt. Roger Keener.

Police say Scott's death may be a drug-related homicide because a small marijuana grow was found inside his apartment.

About 10:40 p.m., police responded to the apartment building after one of the building's residents reported a neighbor in the hallway bleeding from a gunshot wound, Sgt. Eric Krimm said.

The man had stumbled down two floors from his third-floor apartment to pull the fire alarm in the first-floor hallway, alerting residents who had already heard shots ring out.

Scott was taken to Eden Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
