OAKLAND -- A 22-year-old man fatally shot Tuesday night in Sobrante Park was identified by police Wednesday as Marshall Prosser III.
The shooting happened about 7 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Bergedo and Robledo drives where residents had set up a portable basketball hoop, police said.
Officer Eric Milina said Wednesday that Prosser was talking with a group of people when a gunman approached and opened fire on him. He said Prosser "was the target." No one else was hurt and the gunman fled, possibly in a car.
Prosser died later at a hospital.
Milina said Prosser lived in another part of Oakland and investigators are trying to learn why he was in Sobrante Park. Police are also trying to determine a motive for the shooting.
The killing was Oakland's 80th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 78 homicides in the city.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information about the shooting. Anyone with information can call investigators at 510-238-3821 or at a tip line at 510-773-2805 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211
