BETHEL ISLAND -- A construction worker killed Wednesday after apparently being crushed by a concrete staircase was identified Thursday morning as Joshua Silva, 59.
Contra Costa Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said Silva, a Bethel Island resident, was digging near a boat dock when he somehow became trapped near the levee.
The call came in at 5:10 p.m. from the 3600 block of Willow Road, just north of Beacon Harbor, he said.
"We were told a man was trapped between a concrete block and a trench," he said.
It wasn't immediately clear how the accident happened, said Sgt. L. Warren. The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the incident.
Silva was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a hired contractor, Warren said, who was working to improve the dock.
