A 44-year-old Alameda truck driver has been sent to prison for 20 years after taking a plea deal in a case stemming from a shootout he had with Oakland police officers in 2009.

Colin Todd, who originally faced 50 years to life in prison after being charged with two counts of attempted murder, instead was found guilty of assault on a police officer and assault with a deadly weapon.

Todd's shootout with police began on Aug. 30, 2009, when two Oakland officers stopped the flatbed big rig Todd was driving because they saw him driving erratically on 57th Avenue.

When the officers started to leave their car to approach Todd, he jumped out of his truck and fired a shotgun at least three times, court documents state.

Todd climbed back into his truck and sped away on Interstate 880, eventually crashing near 37th Avenue where he got out of the truck and ran away.

Oakland police and SWAT teams from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office spent seven hours searching for Todd before he was found and shot with a beanbag.

Teresa Drenick, spokeswoman for the District Attorney's office, did not say why a deal was offered to Todd.

The office announced the sentence Aug. 28.

FRIDAY, AUG. 24

  • DRUNKEN DRIVING -- Police arrested a man, 22, just after 1 a.m. on suspicion of drunken driving after a patrol officer pulled him over because his vehicle had a faulty brake light.

    The arrest occurred in the 2300 block of Lincoln Avenue after the man allegedly failed field sobriety tests.

  • BURGLARY -- A residential burglary was reported about 5:40 p.m. in the 1100 block of Benton Street, where police said someone stole items from a garage and backyard.

  • NARCOTICS POSSESSION -- A routine background check of a 46-year-old motorist pulled over for a traffic violation revealed he was on searchable probation, which then led officers to discover that he was in possession of three loaded firearms, as well as methamphetamine and marijuana, police said.

    SATURDAY, AUG. 25

  • VEHICLE THEFT -- A thief stole a woman's car after she unknowingly dropped her keys while walking along the Robert Crown Memorial State Beach, then the thief later abandoned the car after becoming involved in a traffic accident. The theft occurred in the 2200 block of Shoreline Drive and the incident was reported just after midnight.

  • DRUNKEN DRIVING -- A man, 24, faces a drunken driving charge following his arrest at 2:25 a.m. during a traffic stop in the 2100 block of Santa Clara Avenue.

  • RECKLESS DRIVING -- A teenager was arrested at 9:20 a.m. after driving a vehicle that struck several fences in the 1900 block of Bay Street. The teen, who is also 13, faces a charge of driving without a license.

    SUNDAY, AUG. 26

  • DRUNKEN DRIVING -- Police arrested a man, 21, on suspicion of drunken driving just after 2 a.m. following a traffic stop in the 2600 block of Buena Vista Avenue, where officers said he failed field sobriety tests.

  • GRAND THEFT -- Someone stole an outboard motor from a boat in the 1800 block of Clement Avenue, police said. The theft was reported about 5:20 p.m.

  • NARCOTICS POSSESSION -- A traffic stop just after 11 p.m. in the 1300 block of High Street led to the arrest of the driver, 23, after a background check revealed that he was driving with an expired license and his passenger, 17, on suspicion of possessing marijuana, police said. The marijuana allegedly was hidden in the vehicle's trunk. The teen was booked at the Alameda police station and released was to a guardian.

    MONDAY, AUG. 27

  • NARCOTICS POSSESSION -- A man, 33, was found with methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop about 12:45 a.m. at Marina Village Parkway and Tynan Avenue, while a 23-year-old woman who was with him was also found with a paraphernalia, police said. Officers arrested the man and released the woman at the scene with a citation.

  • VEHICLE THEFT -- A resident of the 2500 block of Crist Street told Alameda police about 1:15 a.m. that someone stole his vehicle in Oakland.

  • DRUNKEN DRIVING -- Police arrested a man, 50, on suspicion of drunken driving at 10:45 a.m. in the 2900 block of Winsdor Avenue after a caller reported him as suspicious, records show.

  • REGISTRATION COMPLIANCE -- Alameda police officers visited the residences of convicted sex offenders on Stanton Street and Fernside Boulevard to check whether they were fulfilling their registration requirements.

  • ASSAULT -- Three teenagers face assault charges after they were involved in an altercation at Taylor Avenue and Fourth Street, where one of them suffered a broken arm after he was struck with a baseball bat. One suspect initially wielded the bat, but the victim managed to get hold of it during the altercation, police said. The three teens fled in a vehicle and were later identified by the victim, who suffered a minor injury, and taken into custody, police said. The incident occurred about 10:25 p.m.
