OAKLAND -- A man surrendered to police Wednesday and has been arrested on murder and attempted murder charges on suspicion of shooting a killing a neighbor and injuring her young cousin last month, police said.
Larry Alford, 21, of Oakland turned himself in to police headquarters in downtown late Wednesday afternoon, police said. He is accused of killing Demetria Spears, 21, who lived near Alford in an apartment complex in the 1900 block of 85th Avenue, in a shooting that also left her 14-year-old cousin hospitalized.
The shooting happened at 9:35 p.m. Aug. 25. Police said Spears' cousin was visiting her when one of them got into a dispute with Alford, who opened fire. Spears died at the scene; the 14-year-old boy remains in the hospital, but is expected to survive. His name was not released.
Alford ran away after the shooting and his whereabouts were not known until he surrendered Wednesday.
Spears was the mother of a small child, who was not injured during the shooting, police said.
The Alameda County District Attorney's office will review the case and charges could be filed as early as Friday.
