SUNNYVALE -- An unidentified woman was pronounced dead at the hospital after she was struck by a small SUV as she walked across El Camino Real just west of Mathilda Avenue around 5:15 p.m. Thursday, police said.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene is cooperating with investigators, said Sunnyvale police Capt. Carl Rushmeyer. He said it is too early to make any conclusions of why the woman was struck but said it appears she was jaywalking.

He said her name is not known at this time, and she appears to be in her 40s.

Rushmeyer said the westbound lanes of El Camino Real are closed between Mathilda and Pastoria avenues, and will remain blocked until after 8 p.m.
