CONCORD -- A tractor trailer driving westbound Highway 4 may have leaked diesel oil, causing the tractor to catch fire while it was rolling down the road Thursday night, the California Highway Patrol said.
The incident forced the closure of the three right-hand lanes east of Willow Pass Road, according to Officer Pete Van Eckhardt. Motorists should avoid the area.
Calls that a tractor trailer was on fire while driving on the highway began arriving 8:07 p.m. The driver eventually pulled the vehicle over, got out and wasn't injured, the CHP said, but the tractor became fully engulfed in flames.
CHP officers on the scene said it appeared diesel fuel leaked onto the highway from the trailer, Van Eckhardt said.
Fire crews from the Contra Costa Fire Protection District were on the scene, but a cleanup crew was not yet on its way. Debris was strewn across the highway, and it was unknown how long the lanes would remain closed.
