Police in Oakland say armed street robberies are on the rise. They offer these tips to avoid being a victim and what to do to get help if you are victimized:
Victims of recent street robberies were targeted for their personal electronics (smart phones, tablets, etc.) and visible gold jewelry. The victim's awareness of surroundings (or lack thereof), and the ease to which a criminal can access the electronics also played a factor in the likelihood of the crime occcurring.
Take the time to record the serial numbers of your personal electronic devices, and keep the information somewhere, or with someone, to access in case the device is taken in a robbery, burglary or theft. Have this information available when making a report to police. Consider installing owner-managed tracking software on personal electronic devices to assist with recovery.
Anyone with information about any crime related to robbery is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department's robbery and assault unit at 510-238-3326.
