FREMONT-- A 15-year-old girl with the mental capacity of a child was found Saturday in Modesto after disappearing from her Fremont home Thursday afternoon, police said.
Kristina Krage walked away from her home on the 38800 of Bonnie Way in the Glenmoor district about 4 p.m. Thursday, said Detective Bill Veteran. The teenager has the mental capacity of a 7 or 8 year old, as well as a significant speech impediment.
She was last seen by high school classmates around 8 p.m. Thursday outside Bronco Billy's Pizza Parlor at on Niles Boulevard, authorities said.
According to Fremont police spokesperson Geneva Bosques, the teen was also spotted by a BART customer at the Richmond station Friday when she approached them and asked how to get to Modesto via BART. The person told Kristina to take BART to Hayward and catch a Greyhound bus to Modesto, at which point she disappeared in the direction of that city.
According to police, it is likely that Kristina was headed to Modesto in search of her mother, who is thought to be a transient in that city. The girl's father, Chris Krage, said his daughter has slipped away before, but does not usually stay out over night.
Another teen who saw Kristina trying to catch a ride to Modesto called police Friday after learning of the disappearance, Veteran said. Police contacted Modesto police and the Stanislaus County Sheriff's office, who were able to locate Kristina safe within Modesto city limits.
It is unknown at this time if Kristina managed to track down her mother or if she was alone, Bosques said. Kristina has since returned to Fremont and is safe at home with her family.
