Five San Rafael men and a Novato man were cited during a prostitution sting in San Rafael, police said.
The crackdown occurred Friday night in the Canal area, where San Rafael police were targeting prostitution customers, said Sgt. Scott Eberle.
"The goal is to educate the public and those who come to San Rafael for the purpose of prostitution-related crimes that it is not tolerated here in San Rafael," he said. "Both the prostitutes and those who pay for sex will be arrested." During a three-hour period, Eberle said, police cited six suspected johns: Juan Casia, 24, of San Rafael; Jose Colli-Carbajal, 27, of San Rafael; Rene Ucan, 39, of San Rafael; Avelino Mejia Vasquez, 43, of Novato; Osmin Constanza Puac, 28, of San Rafael; and Juan Calel Chan, 18, of San Rafael.
The suspects were released pending review by the district attorney's office.
San Rafael police organized the sting a week after they arrested a man in the Canal area who was suspected of pimping a 19-year-old Fairfield woman, Eberle said. The suspect, 32-year-old David Alex Ward of Santa Rosa, also had a loaded, allegedly stolen gun in his possession.
Ward was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, possession of stolen property, violating parole and other counts. He was scheduled for arraignment Monday.
