Local runners shine at Ed Sias invite

Bishop O'Dowd High's Eugene Hamilton III placed fourth in the boys small school race and the Dragons girls team finished second in its race at the Ed Sias Invitational on Sept. 8. Hamilton produced a time of 10 minutes, 23.1 seconds for the two-mile course at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez, leading his squad to a third-place team finish. In the girls small school race, O'Dowd's Emily Fieberling was fifth (12:57.9) to pace the Dragons to their second-place team finish. St. Joseph Notre Dame's Kimberly Avalos was 10th in that race (13:09.4), and St. Mary's Spencer Moore was sixth in the girls large school race (12:34.4). Louis Rodrigues was ninth (10:32.1) and teammate Gabe Arias-Sheridan was 10th (10:37.4) to pace the St. Joseph Notre Dame boys team to a fourth-place finish in the boys small school race.

Hornets win Silver Division of tourney

The Alameda High girls volleyball team beat Clayton Valley 25-19, 13-25, 15-7 to take first place in the Silver Division of the George Mark Children's House Tournament at Alameda on Sept 8. The Hornets were 3-2 in the tournament. Janelle Ah-Hing had 56 assists in the tournament for Alameda, while Devon Lodge and Maddie Silverman combined for 41 kills and 35 digs for the Hornets.

Encinal at Serra-San Mateo, football, Sept. 14, 4 p.m. -- The Jets' schedule does not let up, as it faces the perennially powerful Padres.

Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco at Bishop O'Dowd, football, Sept. 14, 7 p.m. -- The Dragons will attempt to rebound from their loss to Valley Christian-San Jose.

Albany at St. Mary's, football, Sept. 15, 1;30 p.m. -- The schools face each other, but they are not in the same division of the Tri-County Athletic League this season.

Albany at St. Mary's, volleyball, Sept. 18, approx. 6 p.m. -- The rivals will try to get an early jump in the TCAL standings.

Stars of the week

Keilan Benjamin, El Cerrito football -- Benjamin completed 15 of his 21 passes for 242 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Gauchos' 64-8 victory over Kennedy-Richmond on Sept. 7. He also rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Akil Bordelon, Berkeley football -- Bordelon rushed for a team-high 66 yards on six carries, caught three passes for 86 yards, and scored on a 34-yard punt return in the Yellowjackets' 34-16 loss to Lincoln-Stockton on Sept. 7.

Aiden Shockley, St. Mary's football -- Shockley rushed for 150 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown, on 35 carries in the Panthers' 48-32 loss to Riordan-San Francisco on Sept. 8.

Janelle Ah-Hing, Alameda girls volleyball -- Ah-Hing had 56 assists in the George Mark Children's House Tournament, and also had a combined 13 assists in a 25-10, 25-22, 25-20 loss to Windsor on Sept. 6. and a 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 victory over Pinole Valley on Sept. 4.

Phoebe Grunt, St. Joseph Notre Dame girls volleyball -- Grunt slammed 19 kills and also had eight blocks and two aces in a 25-27, 28-30, 25-21, 25-18, 15-11 comeback victory over Marin Academy on Sept. 4. She also had 17 kills, five blocks and eight digs in a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 victory over University-San Francisco on Sept. 7.

Spencer Kim, Piedmont football -- Kim completed 11 of his 14 passes for 154 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Highlanders' 42-14 win over Albany on Sept. 7.
