The crash was reported at 11:25 p.m. just north of Pescadero Road in San Mateo County, according to CHP spokesman Art Montiel. It shut down both the north and south lanes of the highway until 3:25 a.m.
Police said the male driver of a Chrysler was headed south on Highway 1 when the vehicle ran off the paved roadway. The driver then appeared to overcorrect and veered across the road, slamming into an embankment.
The driver was ejected and found lying in the northbound lane, Montiel said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not identify him, pending notification of relatives.
A passenger in the Chrysler was taken to the hospital with major injuries, Montiel said. The condition of the passenger late Saturday was unknown.
Police were still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the wreck, Montiel said. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call 650-369-6261, ext. 373.
