OAKLEY -- Instead of tossing that chicken fat in the sink, take it to Ironhouse Sanitary District on Saturday.

In the spirit of preventing pollution, the agency will collect household fats, oils and grease from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its facility, 450 Walnut Meadows Drive, Oakley.

Ironhouse Sanitary is encouraging the public to avoid clogged pipes and polluting the Delta by disposing of fats and oils properly instead of pouring them down the drain.

The district uses a company that recycles kitchen grease, turning it into a clean-air fuel.

Ironhouse Sanitary also is trying to get the word out about which substances can and shouldn't go into drains as well as encourage ratepayers to use cleaning products that don't poison the environment.
