Piedmont High quarterback Spencer Kim played the first half of Saturday's nonleague game at Washington-San Francisco despite a broken left pinkie suffered last week. He still threw for 132 yards and a touchdown to lead the Highlanders over the host Eagles 19-6.

Kim completed six of 11 passes. The right-hander played with a cast on his left hand, with padding wrapped around it.

He took a couple of shots and had to come out for a play here and there, but seemed healthy, watching the second half from the sidelines with his shoulder pads off. The Highlanders (4-1) took a 19-0 lead while Kim was behind center.

"He should be healed in another two weeks or so," Piedmont coach Kevin Anderson said. "We have a bye week, then we have San Lorenzo. Homecoming (Oct. 12 against Alameda), he should have that thing off and we should be ready to go.

"We joked that he throws the ball better with the cast because he has to concentrate from snap all the way to finish to get the thing out there. I think once he gets the cast off, he'll be that much better."

Kim connected with Andy Slabaugh on a 48-yard pass on the Highlanders' first possession. Piedmont ended up settling for a 29-yard field goal attempt by Ale Chiodo. The kick was partially blocked and the game remained scoreless.

No worries. Kim capped the Highlanders next possession with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jake Pacheco.

William Meredith scored Piedmont's other two touchdowns

on runs of 3 and 7 yards. The former came one play after the Highlanders blocked a punt and Hunter Abel recovered the ball on the 3. The latter was set up by a 29-yard pass from Kim to Chad Finkel.

Piedmont's defense was outstanding, allowing just 50 yards on the afternoon and holding Washington (0-3) to a single first down in the first half.
