SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Police say an armed gang member wounded by a San Francisco officer last week was on his way to avenge a recent killing.

Undercover officers stopped 22-year-old Oliver Barcenas in the Mission District on Thursday and he was shot when he pulled an assault-style pistol from his waistband and turned toward an officer.

The shooting led to protests and vandalism.

The Richmond man, who is on parole for a gang-related shooting that wounded a 15-year-old bystander, remains hospitalized.

The San Francisco Chronicle (bit.ly/Sun33W) says investigators told about two dozen people at a community meeting on Monday that Barcenas was apparently seeking revenge for the Sept. 16 shooting death of 20-year-old Jesus Solis.
