SAN LEANDRO -- Police said a group of armed robbers struck a supermarket in less than a minute Tuesday night, forcing customers and employees to lie on the ground while they grabbed cash from the registers.
No one was injured, and no shots were fired, according to San Leandro police Lt. Rick DeCosta.
The robbery took place about 9:01 p.m. at the Safeway at 555 Bancroft Ave., DeCosta said. A group of five men in their late teens or early 20s entered the store wearing hooded sweatshirts, with bandannas over their faces.
At least four of the five suspects were armed with handguns, DeCosta said. After telling customers and workers to lie on the floor, they took an unknown amount cash from two registers.
The group may have fled the store on foot, north on Bancroft Avenue, DeCosta said. The entire incident lasted only about 40 seconds, he added.
