CAMPBELL -- A motorist miraculously eluded serious injury after his SUV rolled over in both directions of Highway 17 and somehow dodged contact with any other cars or the center divider, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver of a Toyota 4Runner was southbound near Hamilton Avenue when around 12:25 p.m. Friday he swerved to avoid debris in the road, said Officer D.J. Sarabia. This caused the SUV to roll over several times toward the center of the freeway.

The momentum carried the vehicle into the oncoming northbound lanes, and the trajectory of the flip launched it over the center divider without even scratching it. The SUV stopped upside down, and no cars on either side of the freeway hit it.

Sarabia said the driver, who was not immediately identified, had complaints of pain but was not otherwise injured.

The scene was cleared within an hour.
