In keeping with the Halloween spirit, an "undertaker" will lead evening tours of reportedly haunted sites and recount tragic tales of local families in San Lorenzo and Hayward this month.
Actor Kyle Green will guide the Shrouded Tale tours through San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery, Meek Mansion and McConaghy House, sponsored by the Hayward Area Historical Society.
On the lantern-lit tours, Green will be dressed in Victorian garb as he talks about death traditions and superstitions from that era and some of the more colorful characters buried in the cemetery.
"The tours are very popular; they're a lot of fun," said Myron Freedman, historical society executive director.
"Active" paranormal activity has been found at both McConaghy and Meek by the American Paranormal Research Association, said Heather Farquhar of the historical society.
"We leave it up to the individuals on the tours to decide whether the places are haunted," she said, adding that the main focus of the tours is historical.
Freedman said he has experienced something unusual at the Meek Mansion. "I was by myself in the basement checking the electrical panel. I felt what was definitely some kind of poke," he said. "I thought I had backed into something, but there was nothing behind me."
Tours will be conducted Thursday through Saturday at San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery, Hesperian Boulevard and College Street; Oct. 11 through 13 at Meek Mansion, 17365 Boston Road; and Oct. 18 through 20 at McConaghy House, 18701 Hesperian Blvd.
The tours, at 7 and 9 p.m., are $10 for adults and $5 for those 65 and older, children and historical society members. Space is limited; reservations can be made at 510-581-2516. Details at www.haywardareahistory.org.
