HAYWARD -- A man who shot himself in the head while running from police Monday afternoon has died, according to a spokesman from the Alameda County Coroner's office.

The man's name and age were not released pending an ongoing police investigation.

Officers responded to Montgomery Street and Sunset Boulevard after reports of shots fired just before 4 p.m., Hayward police Lt. Roger Keener said. An officer tried to contact the man, who instead ran away, Keener said.

The man ran down Montgomery Street toward Simon Boulevard before rounding a turn and going out of the officers' sight, Keener said. At that point, the man pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head, he said.

Police tape surrounded two homes in the 2200 block of Montgomery, where the man shot himself.

The man did not have any identification on him, and police said they are just starting to investigate where he's from. He appeared to be in his mid-40s, Keener said.
