PITTSBURG -- A man who sped away from police who tried to pull him over collided with an SUV a few miles later, bringing the pursuit to an end after about five minutes and landing him in jail, police said.
Authorities did not identify the man, who was just east of Willow Pass Road on eastbound Highway 4, when a Contra Costa Sheriff's deputy tried to stop the 2012 silver Kia Sportage about 6:40 p.m., Sgt. Matt Foley said. The deputy followed the man to the Railroad Avenue exit, when the man pulled onto the shoulder of the offramp around 6:45 p.m. and slammed into the SUV, Foley said.
The man jumped out of the car after the crash and briefly tried to run from the deputy before surrendering, Foley said. Police arrested him on suspicion of evading police and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility after being released from a hospital, where he was taken as a precautionary measure, Foley said.
Nobody was in the SUV when it was hit, Foley said.
